# Albert Olivé's Manager Readme

**Engineering Manager at letgo**

## What is this about

The same way we have READMEs to learn how to use the software, I’ve created a README about myself so you can know what I’m like and how I aim to communicate with others. My goal with this is to improve our interactions, so we're both happy and effective!

This document is aimed at everyone that has/wants to deal with me directly or indirectly and wants to understand a bit more why and how I operate.

| My role |

My role at letgo is _[Engineer Manager](https://ambatana.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TPM/pages/1957233018)_, this means that these are the main responsibilities:

- Manage and motivate a diverse, inclusive and collaborative cross-functional team of engineers through hiring, onboarding, mentoring, coaching, direct feedback, and career development.
- Ensure the team delivers extraordinary output (with great technical quality and efficiency), and continuously seeks ways to improve and make an outsized impact.
- Collaborate with other Engineering Managers to ensure the optimal application of technology, engineering resources, and engineering principles among teams.
- Anticipate strategic and scaling-related challenges via long-term planning, helping craft technical and product strategy.
- Work closely and partner with the Product Manager to align technology solutions and strategy with the product vision.

|
| **Environments I like to work in** |
- Environments where people are **positive** with **good energy** and willing to **share** knowledge.
- An environment where people **think thoroughly** about problems, and even come up with some possible solutions before you come to me so we can find the best solution together. I will do my best to help.

|
| **Preferred working hours** |

Mon-Fri between 07:30 to 17:30 BCN time (Yes, I'm a morning person)

|
| **Communication preferences** |
- It’s urgent and cannot wait: come to my desk, ask me to leave a meeting, send me a WhatsApp message, or call me.
- It can wait a while: send me a Slack message.
- It can wait a few hours or days: send me an email.

Please don’t stop yourself from talking with me because you see I’m busy or in meetings all the time. That doesn’t mean I don’t have time to talk to you. If you need anything from me, tell me and I’ll find the time.

When I’m outside of my working hours, if it’s urgent, use any method you prefer (make sure to note that it’s urgent). If not, I prefer email: I read all the emails I receive so I will answer you.

|
| **Preferred ways to receive feedback** |

Give me constant, specific **feedback**. I need it! If you think I’ve made a mistake, I expect you to tell me directly as soon as possible. If you don’t, it might happen again and I don’t want it to.

If it can wait, please use the scheduled 1to1's.

|
| **Things I need** |
- **Transparency and honesty**
I appreciate transparency and honesty when you communicate with me. Don’t hold back when you share opinions, feelings, or information with me. In return, I’ll strive to react in a positive and constructive way.
- **Positivity**
I enjoy being surrounded by people who smile and see the bright side of life, spreading their good energy to everyone else.
- **Fairness**
I try to be fair in my decisions because I can’t stand injustices.
- **Empathy**
I value seeing people who are empathetic and put themselves in others' shoes. I think this is key to working as a team.
- **Humility**
I like working with humble people who are able to keep their egos in check. And I try to do the same.
- **Ownership**
The best way to help me is to have ownership of your work. I believe that the work produced by an individual is part of a greater ecosystem that belongs to the team/company.

|
| **How I learn best** |
- With jokes 😬
- With constructive feedback.
- With patience (Sometimes I don't get it the first time ![](https://a.slack-edge.com/production-standard-emoji-assets/10.2/apple-large/1f605@2x.png))

|
| **Things I struggle with** |
- Sometimes I tend to take things personally so I try to be open and take the feedback the best I can.
- I try to be calm, even in stressful situations, but sometimes I can be a little bit intense ![](https://a.slack-edge.com/production-standard-emoji-assets/10.2/apple-medium/1f605@2x.png) so please, tell me when I am like this because I'm working on it.
- I struggle a little when I have to give **tough feedback** or when having difficult conversations. So please let me know if I’m not being clear enough. One of my goals this year is to improve how I communicate in these situations.

|
| **Things I love** |
- I love when we work as a **team** when we **build things** together and when the people that I'm surrounded are **happy ** and ** positive. ** We’re all working to make letgo successful, so I expect you to collaborate with everyone.

- I love **emoji** 😬 and **GIFs. ** I think that it's very important to use it everywhere while having a conversation online. It helps to communicate better.
- I consider myself an **organized** person: you may see me organizing meetings well in advance. Don’t worry, I don’t expect the same from others, although I feel more comfortable when things are organized.
- I'm always interested in **learning** new stuff that other people do and I take recommendations quite often.

|
| **Other things I want you to know about me** |
- According to the **16Personalities test** , I’m “The Defender” (ISFJ-T): “Though sensitive, Defenders have excellent analytical abilities; though reserved, they have well-developed people skills and robust social relationships;”. | 1:1s |

We will be doing bi-weekly or monthly 1:1s and the main goal is to make them useful for you. I’ll expect you to be the one to lead them, not me; so we can use the time to make your (and your team’s) day to day better.

In addition to that, I will make sure the following subjects come up from time to time:

- Your motivation.
- Exchange of mutual feedback.
- Your professional development.
- Relevant company info or context I want to share with you.

Don’t feel restricted by the bi-weekly or monthly 1:1s. If you need more, find me and we’ll chat whenever you want.
