# Andrew Tran's Manager Readme

**Sr. Engineering Manager at AuditBoard**

# Welcome!

If you've stumbled across this page, it's likely that you're someone on my immediate team, or someone who's interested in working with me. Either way, welcome! I've decided to use this page as a way to share a bit about my perspective on my management style, and my ideals for how a team should operate. You can certainly continue to reference this as you need, but hopefully going through it once gives you a strong idea of how to make the most of working with me.

# My role

As an engineering manager, I would define my role's responsibilities as:

- Ensuring everyone on my team is happy with their work, and successful in their work
- Ensuring everyone on my team has goals to build their career & their skills, and is on a path to get there
- Ensuring everyone on my team is getting the support they need from other teams
- Ensuring my team continues having tremendous impact on our business growth.

# What you can expect of me as your manager

**Provide context.** I'll share the information with you that you need to build impactful solutions for your customer. I can provide alignment between your projects and our high-level business goals. I'll equip you with the information you need to do your best work, or I'll at least put you in touch with the people who can.

**Personal/career growth & planning****. **We'll work together to set your goals and your direction of growth. I'll help to provide feedback on how I think you're doing on reaching your goals. I'll help you re-assess your goals if we need to course-correct. I'll look for opportunities that push you towards your goals.

**Regular 1:1s. ** These are an opportunity to have open and candid conversations. Raise any concerns you have about the team, your work, the product, the culture, or me. Celebrate all of the things that are going well. Discuss **anything** that could help make work better for you.

# What do I value most?

**I value having a strong relationship with my team**. It is important to build trust with each other, to be open and candid with each other. It's important to approach our problems collaboratively, as allies. It's important to have conversations about "tough" things as we need to, since that's what it'll take to make those tough things better.

# My Expectations

Here is what I expect from the teams that I work with:

- **Ownership =\> ** Engage in product discussions. Gather the requirements and define the work. Build it, test it, and document it. Update stakeholders regularly. Make informed decisions. Keep the product healthy.
- **Open Communication =\>** Identify and talk about what your goals, ambitions, and aspirations are (so I can help you with them!). When obstacles arise or work feels-off track, let the team & stakeholders know. When things get frustrating or aren't going well, let's work through it together.
- **Tight Collaboration =\> ** Work with your teammates, regularly. Pair with each other. Teach each other things. Learn & problem solve together. Win, together.
- **Own your **** Personal Development =\> **We will set goals and strategize together. I will give feedback and hold you accountable. I'll support you by seeking out the opportunities you need. Ultimately, it's up to you if you want to step-up and and execute to get to the next level.

# 1:1s

1:1s should be happening on a weekly to biweekly basis, depending on your preference. Ideally, this is **your time** to talk about your top of mind. Sometimes there'll be organizational things that I'll bring to talk to about. But generally, **You should lead these conversations. ** If you're unsure about how to begin leading these conversations, here's a list of questions that you can pull from - hopefully one of these resonates or sparks good discussion.

- **How are you doing?**
- **How do you feel about your team/teammates?**
- **Are you getting what you need?**
- **What do you wish could be different?**
- **What kind of progress have you been making towards your goals?**
- **Do you feel adequately challenged/engaged with your work?**
- **What kinds of opportunities are you lacking that we can provide?**
- **What are your personal/career goals and how can we better address them?**

# Providing Feedback

If you have feedback for me, please give it. It could be something you liked and would like to see more of, something you thought I could do better, something you thought I totally screwed up, or something else entirely. Even if you think it might not be the case, I _do_ want to hear it. Feedback helps us grow and improve, and I want to grow and improve as much as you do.

With feedback as a tool for growing and improving, I think it's silly to wait for an annual review to go over feedback. I want to provide you with feedback on a regular basis, so that you can consistently grow and improve. Similarly, I hope that you'll provide me with regular feedback. I'll also ask you for feedback when I feel like I need it, and you should feel free to ask me for feedback as much as you need, too.
