# Edgar Hilton's Manager Readme

**Founder and President at Jimbot Gym Technologies**

# **My Role**

I believe that my role, as a manager and leader, is to:

- Steer the team in the correct direction, as dictated by business needs
- Create a bubble of protection around my team, so that:
 - they can shine doing what they love and do best
 - they can freely apply their skills without constraint
 - they can voice their opinions in a safe environment
 - they can make mistakes and grow

- Be my team's first line of defense against:
 - obstacles
 - meetings
 - external task creep
 - internal task creep

- Keep my team motivated by
 - matching tasks with the right person based on strengths and/or interests
 - be on the lookout for things that help them with personal, and career growth

- Mentor and coach team members on:
 - culture,
 - engineering best practices,
 - company procedures

- Break down barriers to communication
 - Between team members
 - Between team members and me

- Help my team members achieve a healthy work/life balance as much as possible
- Look for, and strengthen, the weakest links

Most importantly, I recognize that -- as a team -- we spend countless hours with each other. Therefore, we are a type of family, where all members should feel welcome, safe, and respected. It is my job to make sure that this happens.

# **My Expectations**

My expectations for my engineers and direct reports are simple:

- I believe that all team members are professionals
 - I fully expect them to act accordingly
 - I fully trust them unless proven otherwise

- If they make mistakes, they should:
 - Not dwell on the mistakes
 - Learn from the mistakes
 - Improve

- I am not in the business of dragging people along. Therefore, I expect my team members to:
 - Step up!
 - Volunteer!
 - Help each other!
 - Treat each other with respect!
 - Help each other grow!

- Communication is key. I expect my team to communicate freely:
 - With me.
 - Within the team.
 - When something goes wrong
 - When something goes right

- With very few exceptions, quality always comes first, and speed comes second. Therefore, I expect any member in my team to feel comfortable enough to pull the virtual lever that stops all production when quality is compromised. Whether this team member is the most senior, or the most junior person in the team.
- _Most importantly, I expect my team members to tell me -- at any time -- that I am full of myself whenever I make a bad decision that could impact our quality or speed._

# **1-on-1's**

I like to do 1 on 1's with my team. Monthly, as a minimum, or more, if desired.

- These are not status update meetings.
- Anything under the sun is a worthy topic.
- We use this time to set a series of goals, and make sure we are doing what it takes to make those goals a reality. This includes, but is not limited to:
 - Career goals for you.
 - Strategic goals from me.
 - Specific goals for me
