# Niklas Engberg's Manager Readme

**Software Engineer at Blocket**

# ! Currently I am not working as a manager but this document still describes my style of management !

# Motivation for this document

This document serves as an introduction of me and my style of management. I will also share what I value and what I expect from you working with me. This way we can start from common ground and have a discussion about how we can work effectively together.

The primary audience for this document is anyone who reports to me, but can be used by anyone that wants to know how I work.

This document will be a work in progress as I've recently just started my journey as a manager. With that said I would love to get some feedback if you feel that some parts are weird or missing.

## Disclaimer

This document applies only to me, and should not be considered to apply to any other team or manager at Santander Consumer Bank.

# My role

My role is twofold. The development team and the business.

From the team perspective my role is to make you feel comfortable and successful. This includes helping you grow as an individual, to acheive your goals and career path. With that said I will do my best to remove all impediments and create the best opportunity for you.

From the business perspective my role is to make sure that we are working on the right things in line with our goals. I will also try to hire the best people to strengthen our teams.

# What do I value most?

- People. The key to success are the people (read: you) doing the work. I want to make sure that you have the best conditions.
- Honest and direct feedback.
- Teamwork.
- To always challenge the current situation.
- Balance between life and work. If you feel that you have too much to do. Please get in touch with me.
- Transparency. I will always try to be as transparent as I can with you. I am hoping you will be the same with me.

# My Expectations

I won't tell you how to manage your time or how to do your work unless you explicitly ask for it, you are the expert here and I trust you. If you feel that you want extra guidance I will of course help you out. I have an open door policy. Book time on my calendar, shoot me a slack message, an e-mail, or just show up at my desk in person. It's my job to be there for you. Do not assume I am too busy.

## What I expect from you

- Will contribute with suggestions and/or improvements if you feel that they could add value to us.
- Will give me feedback. It could be something that you liked or it could be something you think that I can do better.

# 1-2-1s

This will vary from individual to individual. But we will have recurring 1:1s and it is up to you to schedule a time. This meeting is mainly for you and should be seen as an opportunity to bring up questions and concerns. Questions such as: What's on your mind? What do you want to talk about? Where do you want to focus your time? Where do you want to grow your career into? are some examples that might be good to talk about.

# Personality quirks

- I am a big fan of Clean Code and think that simplicity overwins complex systems.
- I believe in autonomy and accountability.
- Even though I'm not a pure developer I still do love code and beautiful solutions, so don't be afraid diving deep into nerdy details with me ;)

# Your first 90 days

- I willl ensure that you have protected time to learn anything you need to to get up to speed.
- If you hit any constraints that you think should be removed. I will help you with that.
- If you are new, my recommendation is that you get to know your team, ask questions and be interested.
