# Motivation for this document

If you are reading this page, it's because our career paths have crossed in some way.&nbsp; : )&nbsp; It's important that you understand what motivates me, and what I&nbsp;value -- it's important you know my&nbsp;expectations.

Communication is the most important part of being a leader.&nbsp; So this is my attempt to communicate a bit of insight into who I&nbsp;am.&nbsp;&nbsp;

# My role

Hello, my name is Justin Miyake (pronounced "Mi-ya-keh").&nbsp; : )&nbsp; My role is to be a positive disruptor of the status quo.&nbsp; I&nbsp;like to form balanced teams to solve interesting business problems.&nbsp; Along the way, we will encounter challenges that we will turn into learning opportunities.&nbsp; It's my job to look after the health of the team and&nbsp;it's my responsibility to make sure you are happy and successful.

# My&nbsp;leadership style

These are the core tenants that drive me as a manager.

What I value

- **Family:&nbsp;&nbsp;** We wouldn't be here if it weren't for the support of our family.&nbsp; So "Family Comes First" (FCF) to me.&nbsp; No question about that.  
- **Teamwork:&nbsp;&nbsp;** For me, I've learned a lot from failure.&nbsp;&nbsp;It's invaluable watching a team trust each other, have each other's back, grow immensely and solve complex problems together.
- **Culture:&nbsp;&nbsp;** It's my responsibility to create an open, fun, and safe environment for you to succeed. Where I&nbsp;want to instill the mindset of making something better than it was before.&nbsp; It's just as important to find ways to reinvent yourself through continuous improvement.
- **Don't give up:&nbsp;&nbsp;** It's much&nbsp;easier to give up on solving a hard problem.&nbsp; Take ownership of your work and see it through to completion.&nbsp; My job is to protect your time from disruption so you can focus on the work at hand.&nbsp; It's a rewarding experience when you persevere through tough times and complete a project!  
- **Ownership:&nbsp;** Be accountable for your work.&nbsp; Call me out if I'm not owning a commitment!  
- **Freedom to operate:&nbsp;** We need the freedom to do our job.&nbsp; So I do not seek power or control (i.e., micro-manage) direct reports.&nbsp; I prefer to be proactive and ask questions about your work.&nbsp; So I can understand if you have the right level of support to do your job.&nbsp; I will support my team, however, I can.&nbsp; I&nbsp;truly want my direct reports to feel empowered to do great things.  
- **Always leave the place better than you found it:&nbsp;&nbsp;** Enough said.

# My Expectations

**1:1s**

I like to meet with my team often.&nbsp; I&nbsp;try to meet with my direct reports (e.g., 1:1 meetings, lunch, coffee, team events, etc.).&nbsp;&nbsp;

For my team, this is your opportunity to own this meeting.&nbsp; Tell me where you need&nbsp;support or assistance with work, coaching, and professional development.&nbsp; &nbsp;

I will always communicate with you any important updates about the company.&nbsp; I&nbsp;will be open, honest, and direct with you.

**Communication**

There's a recurring theme here.&nbsp; : )&nbsp; When you need my support, it's ok to speak with me&nbsp;right away.&nbsp; I like to handle questions and concerns in real-time.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&nbsp;feel this is a healthy way to communicate.&nbsp;

# About me

- I&nbsp;am native to the Portland metropolitan area.
- I&nbsp;don't sleep much because I have three&nbsp;young kids.&nbsp; : P
- I&nbsp;don't have many hobbies now because I&nbsp;have three young kids.&nbsp; ; P
- I&nbsp;like to travel with my wife to new places.
- I&nbsp;like to use my camera and drone to take pictures and movies of our travel.&nbsp; Then I like to turn the pictures and videos into HD and UHD videos.
- I'm an Arsenal&nbsp;futbol&nbsp;fan.&nbsp; And I&nbsp;play soccer too.&nbsp;&nbsp;
- I&nbsp;like all kinds of automobiles.

# Schedule

My official working hours are:

- 8 am-5 pm (pacific) Monday-Friday.

My calendar runs my life, and if there is an open slot on my calendar, take it before someone else does.

Sometimes I&nbsp;check Slack messages and email&nbsp;in the off-hours (with the exception of Friday evening).&nbsp;&nbsp;

**Communications.** &nbsp;This year my goal is to be in fewer meetings so I can spend more time with my team.

- I&nbsp;prefer in-person communication.
- Then you can reach me on&nbsp;Slack and via text messages.
- Then you can call my mobile&nbsp;phone.
- Typically if I'm online, I will reply to text messages right away.
- I get a lot of emails, sometimes I can't reply until the next day.&nbsp; Hence why I prefer in-person communication.&nbsp; :)&nbsp;
