# Ludo's Manager Readme

**Engineering Manager at Adobe**

# Intro

Hi, I'm Ludovic. Everyone calls me "Ludo", so you can call me "Ludo" :)

This is my Manager README. Even though it is a public document, it concerns essentially the people who report to me. I hope it will give you some insights of who I am, how I see my role, and what you can expect from me.

If you find some gaps between what you will read in this document, and how we work together, don't hesitate to let me know.

I attend to edit this page from time to time, this document should evolve while I'm evolving too.

# My role

As an Engineering Manager, I am here to ensure our team is **happy** , **successful** and **focused** on what matters the most for our customers and our business.

- I am here to ensure you have what you need to grow your career and improve your technical skills.
- I am here to ensure, as a team, we have what we need, in terms of direction and support, from other teams and third parties.
- I am here to ensure, as a team, we deliver our commitments. My role is to remove our roadblocks, provide context and priorities.

# What you can expect of me

- **Build a robust team culture** - I want you to feel included within our team. I believe that a healthy team culture is the key to your and our company's success.
- **Listen to you** - A big part of my job is to listen. I know, sometimes I can talk too much (I'm working on it!). But I'm here to listen to you. Without judging. I should understand your struggles, and provide you the help you need.
- **Help you reaching your goals** - We will define your career path together. I will be there to provide you the tools and thoughts to walk down this path.
- **Give ideas, not solutions** - I am here to suggest. I am here to advise. I can guide you, but you will have to find the solutions and implement them.
- **Build alongside you** - I am not just a people manager. I will still help you build, review your pull requests, make sure our production platform is always up and help with any kind of issues you may face.

# What I expect of you

- **Give** - Successful people tend to give. Their time, their opinion, their feedbacks, their advices. I expect that you to give all that to our team. To make benevolent code reviews. To share your knowledge. Helping our team to grow will help you grow as well.
- **Learn** - You have the right to fail. You have the right to make mistakes. As long as you learn from those. Learning and sharing are keys to your professional growth.
- **Take your time** - When we define goals, it does not mean you have to reach them right now. Growing takes time. Learning takes time. Appreciate the process, not just the results.
- **Ensure quality and sustainability** - As an Engineer, your main goal is to make sure the software you build respect our high quality standards. Always think about our production environment first. Think about the "6 months from now" you. Build with sustainability in mind.

# How we will work together

We will have our team meetings. This is the time for operational work and questions. There are some meeting I lead, and some that one of the other team members will lead. It can be our technical lead or anyone else. Usually is those kind of meetings, I'm more quiet, will take notes, and give you a feedback quickly after regarding how it went.

Besides the operational work, we will have regular meetings to follow up on your thoughts and your career.

- **Checkins** - Every 3 months, we will have a checkin. This is our most powerful tool to help you with your career growth. Together, we will put some words on your strengths and weaknesses. We will find what makes sense for you to develop, improve.

- **1:1s** - I will schedule our 1:1 once a week. I make a rule not to cancel them. This is not a status meeting or a moment to discuss a specific projet. This is a moment for you to talk about everything you want, without any taboo.

You should not wait for a 1:1 to tell me something urgent or important. I will always find time to chat with you if you want to. Choose the channel of communication that suits you the most, it can be slack, or an email, or feel free to book me some time on my agenda, it's always up-to-date!

# Personality quirks

I used to play soccer. So I know what a team spirit is, and I know the importance of the team. I also climb often as I find out this sport challenges me a lot.

I don't give up. I am always solution oriented. As Engineers, our job is to solve problems. As an Engineering Manager, it's the same, with different kind of problems.

I'm always working on getting better with delegation and providing context. I'm always asking myself questions about my leadership and management, and how to improve those. I am always wondering how I can be a better person in a day, a month, or a year. So I'm always open to receive feedback, please don't hesitate to prive one!

Also, I like coffee and drink a lot of it. I also like craft beers, food, and travelling.
