# Manish's Manager Readme

**Manager at Worldpay**

# Motivation for this document

This document is my attempt to put down in writing everything that defines who I am, what I value, and what I expect when you work with me. The primary audience for this document is anyone who I work for or is in one of my teams, though everyone else is free to read and feedback on it.

I've been steadily evolving my approach to leadership over the past few years, and this document attempts to distill the important parts of that into something that's easy to consume.

Please treat this as a reference and a promise on how I will conduct myself as a lead, and a guide on what I expect from you. I urge you to call out anything that might be missing from this document. Without your guidance, I will not be able to improve as a lead.

# My role

My role is varied and ultimately falls into two categories - my responsibilities to you, and my responsibilities to the business.

My responsibilities to the business are:

- Making sure the teams are aligned to the business goals and working towards those as effectively as possible.
- Delivering ‘value’ to the business from the team – value that is mostly centric to customers but also around the internal metrics
- Making sure we are working on important business priorities.
- Representing the IT to both business, end users and all our customers.
- Helping the team grow, the culture and organization.

My responsibilities to you are:

- Help you to be successful and happy.
- Support you in your personal development, provide mentor-ship and guidance.
- Help you understand the wider context of the work you are doing and its impact.
- Ensure we have right processes and procedures in place that help us add values for our business.
- To give you direct feedback, both positive or negative, quickly.
- Make it easier for you to do your job.

# What do I value most?

**People** – Our people (the team, and those of wider organization) are the main reason we are successful, and I care immensely about their happiness.

**Continuous improvement** – I believe in continuous learning and improvements. I expect you do the same on regular work and your protected time and as much I’ll help and support you while you work on that improvement, I expect that improvements are driven by you.

**Trust/autonomy** – I will default to a trust/autonomy mindset for our working relationship. I’m happy to be involved if you need me. Tell me what you intent to do, share, communicate and I’ll let you know if I have any concerns.

**Ownership/accountability** – I take ownership and accountability for my work and I value it in others. Owning a problem, a business area, or whatever it is you're doing, and making it your own removes my need to do so, and reduces the chances of me becoming a bottleneck in any communications.

**Feedback** - - I care about doing a good job, and I care about those things that are important to my role above - if you feel I'm not delivering on those, or I could be doing so more effectively, I will genuinely appreciate and value any feedback you have for me.

**Collaboration** - I love people who work together to achieve better flow of work. This is true not only within the team, but working with others outside of the team. Collaboration and sharing is a cornerstone to us building better relationships.

**Perseverance** - failure happens. That's absolutely ok. The best people will learn from that failure and move forward, and their attitude will rarely steer into the negative.

**Your health** -

**Communication:**

# 1:1s

We will have a 1:1 at the very least once every two weeks, for 30 uninterrupted minutes.

You will be able to raise any issue that comes to your mind as long as it's personal or strategic. I expect that you come prepared, as will I

While not binding, here's some starters:

1. Any self-improvement idea/issue you want to raise.
2. Any cross-team interface ideas/issues you want to raise.
3. Any feedback that you have for me.
4. Any feedback that I have for you.
5. Any strategic (no tasks!) subject you'd like to raise
