# Poi Hierro's Manager Readme

**Director and Group Head of Technology at Entrego**

# Motivation for this document

This is my Manager README, a document that helps introduce you to my management style, philosophy, and expectations. The intended audience is primarily anyone who reports in to me, though anyone is free to read it - or even provide feedback on it! Please treat it as a reference and promise on how I will conduct myself as a manager, and what I expect from you.

# My role

As an Head of Engineering at Entrego it is my job to to set context for what you’re working on, and to advocate, improve, grow for you and the team, giving value to the rest of Entrego and it's partners with both quality on our deliveries through improving the process and the product.

This is where would see my role to you, the team and to the company:

- [PEOPLE] Improve individuals through coaching and mentoring
- [PEOPLE] Hire and retain talent (that's you!)
- [PROCESS] Raise the bar
- [PRODUCT] Improve Technical Solutions
- [PRODUCT] Be Responsible for quality and interoperability

I’m here to help and support you.

# What do I value most?

I am not the authoritarian boss. I do not want to micromanage anyone - it's not a good use of my time, or yours.

People comes first, the delivery comes second. Obviously, I have a responsibility to the company, but without a well operating, well staffed, and well-functioning team, I am unable to live up to those responsibilities. Your success is ultimately my success - so I will go out of my way to try and make you successful.

You can always notice me in meetings whether attending stand ups, talking to our product team or BI Teams or helping a developer. Regardless of how busy I am, nothing is more important than the time I can spend with you. If you need to chat - find time on my calendar - no need to ask. If you can't find time, I will make time.

# My Expectations

I expect you to operate as a [Directly Responsible Individual](https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2012/10/02/how-well-does-apples-directly-responsible-individual-dri-model-work-in-practice/#61177f5b194c). We hired you because of your experience and skills, and I am not here to tell you how to do your job. I believe you are able to operate as a professional adult, and make smart decisions. This does not mean that I expect you to do everything on your own - I am here to provide you guidance and mentorship (either through me, or by finding the people you should be getting it from). When you need help, I expect you to not hesitate and ask for it. If you feel you made a mistake, own up to it.

# 1:1s

I value all 1:1s. I would expect you to lead our 1:1s, rather than me. This is more about you than me: this shouldn’t be a Project Status Report since I can get that on confluence and status email updates. I would be interested to get to know about you, if there is anything that you would share, in and outside of work. I also believe in timely feedback - this is the venue where you can be completely safe in anything that you would raise towards me, about your job, about the team, about the company. I will give you feedback on how you're doing in our 1:1. If I'm concerned about your performance, I will let you know. If you are concerned that I'm worried about your performance, please let me know.

# Personality quirks

I tend to speak fast if I am excited on things or on a topic. Please avoid asking me vague questions like, "Can I ask you a question?" since that is already a question in itself. Sometimes I over exaggerate my words, which would confuse you at times - please feel free to ask a clarifying question in order for us to be on the same page. Be prepared for me to suddenly ask you non-work related question at random times at your favorite messaging app - this is just one way for me to reach out to you as a person and not as your manager. I tend to work long hours - but as much as possible don't follow my lead and i don't want you to as well. I also believe that no team member is bigger than the team. We are all in this shit together. No rockstars.

# I am working on

- Improving my verbal communications, to be able to explain coherently and cohesively
- Finding better ways to influence and teach things I am passionate about
- Being better everyday.

You have a valuable role in helping me improve. You can help me identify the things I should be working on, or how I could approach things differently to be more effective.
